Kate Santhuff, Cape Fear Community College
Kate Johnson Santhuff serves as the Treasurer of NCSLC Board of Directors.. Her role as Educational Partnerships Liaison at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC, allows her a broad range of responsibilities. First and foremost, she is the liaison for the Wilmington Early College High School, where she advises students about their college coursework and progression and coaches them toward the goal of receiving a two-year college transfer degree, concurrent with their completion of high school. She is also charged with managing the community college’s Service-Learning program and she teaches Communications courses for the Humanities and Fine Arts department.
As service-learning coordinator, Santhuff helps students and faculty with community non-profit connections for experiential learning opportunities. She also sponsors a student organization, the Community Involvement & Service-Learning Alliance (CISL). Santhuff spearheaded the Not4$ale Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative, and she subsequently led the planning and implementation of seven community events to raise awareness and intervention efforts among law enforcement, educators, artists, students and the general public.
Santhuff received her Master’s in Mass Communications from Emerson College in Boston, and her Bachelor’s in Communications Studies from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Her education career has incorporated teaching at the preschool, high school and college levels, as well as training teachers and developing K-12 resources for non-profit educational providers such as the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her strong interest in education revitalization has led her to projects that encourage innovative teaching and learning, such as the National Teacher Training Institute for Math, Science and Technology; the New Schools/Breakthrough Learning high school redesign; and service-learning initiatives throughout North Carolina.
