Teachers are real life superheroes. They educate, innovate, encourage and support. Every day they touch the lives of millions of children and their work and impact extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.Take the time to celebrate these real life superheroes during PTA Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-6, 2016. The NEA has partnered with GoFundMe to celebrate these superheroes who give so much to our communities. http://www.pta.org/thankateacher
During Teacher Appreciate Week, we also celebrate Jahana Hayes from Waterbury, Connecticut, who was recently named the new National Teacher of the Year. Hayes will spend the next year traveling around the country as an advocate for educators. We’re especially excited that she hopes to use her new platform to promote service-learning: “We spend a lot of time teaching kids to be self-sufficient and high achievers, and I think we really need to spend some time also teaching them: OK, now what do you do with that? What does it mean? You have this knowledge and information, how can you use it to improve the human condition? I think we need to nurture empathy from a very early age.” Read the article on The Huffington Post and watch an interview with her from CBS This Morning.
